About Greg...

Greg Watkins (aka Richard G. Watkins) first began playing bass at the age of 18 years. It all began when he ran across a picture of a bass guitar in a music magazine. Being impressed with the long neck and "Big, Fat strings", Greg immediately fell in love with the instrument. The only problem was he did not know what the bass guitar sounded like! Listening heavily to the music of Keith Green and The Smiths (now there's an interesting combo), he started trying to distinguish what the bass lines were.

It just so happened that Greg's grandfather, Richard C. Bay, played guitar. Richard knew a friend with a bass guitar for sell. So, armed with cash and a desire, Greg bought his first bass, an Ibanez Roadstar II 4 string. Greg's grandfather taught him the basic fundamentals of playing, and Greg was now ready (or so he thought) to take on the world. He started playing at his local church under the direction of Maurice Chavez, and soon discovered the joys of playing live. With the help of fellow bassist Mike Garcia, Greg learned what to play and most important: what NOT to play. By the end of 1995, Greg was playing 4 worship services a week at HI Desert Christian Center in Barstow, CA.

After enlisting in the Army as an armor crewman (Tanker) in January 1996, Greg found himself in the beautiful Colorado Springs, CO. He began playing with the worship team at Woodmen Valley Chapel, and soon met a singer/songwriter/guitarist by the name of Steve Keith. Steve and Greg, along with Bill Harris (guitarist) started a rock band called the "WattDogs". The WattDogs played the usual coffee house gigs, and performed regularly at "The Gardens,” a hard rock bar in Colorado Springs. January of 1998 took Greg to Korea, where he met Mark Stoddard (Lava Cable) and started a band called "CC Blues Society". CC Blues Society was the house band for a local club named "Marty's". This band was also hired by MWR to play gigs all over South Korea in the MWR clubs. Being in this band, Greg quickly discovered that he wanted to do music full time. Playing with very talented musicians enforced the thought of professionalism and Greg took that seriously.

After Greg's stint in Korea, he moved to Manhattan, Kansas. For several years he played bass with Westview Community Church, under the direction of Ron Lackey and Nate McClendon. When a new church was birthed out of Westview, Lance Stafford (Cloverton) was hired as the Music/Technical Arts director. Real Life Church afforded yet another opportunity for Greg to play. Out of the many bar/club/church gigs, Greg enjoys an atmosphere where he can help the listener relax and get lost in the music.

Greg was Honorably discharged for the U.S. Army in 2012, after serving for 15 years. A veteran of both the Iraq and Afghanistan military campaigns, Greg eventually left the service to pursue his musical dreams and ambitions.

In early 2011 he started started Custer Cottage Music as a songwriter and music publisher. Greg has recorded and mixed numerous original songs in various studios in and around San Diego,Nashville, Omaha, and other venues. In June 2025, Greg relocated to Salina, KS. He is a husband, and father of four children. He looks forward to enhancing his skills, and passing down his passion onto aspiring musicians and songwriters.
